Boilermaker Police Officer Runs in Honor of Fallen Officer

New Hartford, NY (June 29, 2007) - This year will mark the third annual New Balance Police vs. Firemen Competition. In running the Boilermaker, representatives from the Utica Police Departments will compete against members of the Utica Fire Department for the title of Boilermaker Public Safety Champion of the City. The competition gives spectators and other runners a chance to see which department will have the five fastest Boilermaker 15-kilometer finishers to grab The New Balance Traveling Trophy and the title for 2007.

This year's competition is unique from past years. Runners are competing in honor of Officer Thomas Lindsey, a police officer who was tragically shot this past year (http://officerlindsey.com). Mayor Julian said, "Officer Lindsey served our city with tremendous distinction. To echo the words of Police Chief C. Allen Pylman, he was one of our 'steady Eddies.'" Officer Sean Dougherty will be honoring Officer Lindsey by wearing his bib number, 4963, which was Officer Lindsey's badge number, while racing.

New Balance Athletic Shoe Company of Boston is especially touched to sponsor this year's competition between the Utica Police and Fire Departments. New Balance supplies running gear for all members of both teams, along with running suits and running shoes for the winning team. The large "New Balance Trophy” is awarded to the team with the fastest top five runners from the winning team. The trophy is presented on stage at the Awards Ceremony during the Gala Price Chopper Post Race Party, in front of approximately 40,000 people.

The nation's largest 15K road race in its 30th year, the Boilermaker is the premier event of the National Distance Running Hall of Fame's annual Hall of Fame Weekend. The race consistently attracts elite runners from all over the world, including Olympians and world record holders, and features distance running's most enthusiastic fans, as well as the sport's best post-race party, hosted at The Matt Brewing Company.
